Russian church positive on Syria unity
Syria: The visiting head of the Russian Orthodox Church says Syria
will be able to uphold its national unity and overcome the unrest it has
been grappling with.
In a statement upon his arrival in Syria on Saturday, Patriarch of
Moscow and All Russia Kirill expressed confidence that the wisdom of the
Syrian people will help them find a solution to the crisis in their
country.
Kirill met with Syrian Prime Minister Adel Safar, who stressed
Syria's determination to perform a comprehensive reform in politics,
economy and media. Patriarch Kirill also visited the Mariamite Cathedral
of Damascus, where he prayed for Syria to be peaceful and prosperous.
The high-ranking priest, who is on a four-day visit to Syria and
Lebanon, is scheduled to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on
Sunday. He will also meet with the top Sunni Muslim cleric in the
