Accident victim dies
 

A forty-year-old resident of David Road, Jaffna was knocked down by a bus opposite Jaffna Prisons last Wednesday at 7.30 p.m. He had succumbed to his injuries the following day at Jaffna Teaching Hospital. He was identified as Bastiampillai Mangalathas.


Army to build 2,000 houses

The Army will build 2,000 permanent houses to the homeless in Point Pedro, Vettilaikerni and in Vadamaradchy said, Jaffna Commander Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe. Each house is built at a cost of Rs 300,000. The government valuers have valued it as Rs 600,000. The Army spend Rs 54 million for the construction. The Army has launched this scheme to solve the housing problem of the resettlers in Vadamaradchy, the Jaffna Commander said.


Large chariot under construction

A 52-foot high chariot (Ther) is being built at the historic Mavidapuram Kandasamy Kovil. Five chariots in the temple had been burnt during the conflict and now with the help of benevolent devotees and temple administrators, a chariot at a cost of Rs 130,000 is being built by the architects and sculptors brought from India. The construction the Ther could be completed in 16 months, said the Chief Priest of the temple.


Falling branch kills man

A heavy branch of a kohomba tree fell on the shoulder of a person standing under the tree while the branch was chopped from the tree at Mirusuvil.

He was immediately taken to the hospital in an unconscious state. Emergency treatment at the hospital was of no avail and he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Ponnudurai Mahendran (36) of Mirusuvil South was the deceased.


Pervert in Police net

A sex pervert who allegedly had sex with his lover filmed the sordid scenes of his sex and copied them in CDs and made business out of them. He has been arrested by the Jaffna Police. It is said that the suspect of Koddady, Jaffna had a lover at Velanai. He had been on visiting terms with her. During this period he had taken snaps of his sex with her with his mobile telephone. His lover has gone abroad and he has made use of the snaps to compile a blue film and had been making money.


Former Hindu College teacher found murdered

A former teacher of Jaffna Hindu College and Principal Varany Karampaikuruchi Government Tamil School Sivasubramaniam Thayaparan, 43, has been murdered at his home by unknown persons last Thursday night. Several stab injuries were found on his neck, shoulder and chest inflicted by small knives. Though the injuries were not deep he has died of severe haemorrhage, states the post-mortem report. On the day of the incident he had gone to this home at Meesalai and returned to his wife's place at Kanthermadam at 9 p.m. after purchasing jewellery worth Rs 250,000.

The postmortem report states that the deceased would have struggled with the murderers and the murder would have been committed by more than one person. Jaffna District Judge A Premsankar visited the scene and held the magisterial inquiry and returned a verdict of homicide.
