Marsh, Bichel join Australian selection panel

Former Test players Rod Marsh and Andy Bichel have been appointed to Australia's revamped selection panel, Cricket Australia said on Thursday.

Marsh and Bichel will join full-time national selector John Inverarity, a new head coach to be appointed and Test captain Michael Clarke on the panel.

CA's new General Manager Pat Howard said the appointees would bring their own attributes to the panel and that selectors were now based in different parts of Australia.

"Rod Marsh is quite simply a legend of the game with successful high performance coaching experience in Australia, England and Dubai since he retired as Australia's (then) most successful wicketkeeper-batsman," he said.

Retirement

"Andy Bichel has had success in the shortest form of the game since his retirement as a Test new ball bowler and he and Rod bring complementary skills to the selection table to those of John Inverarity."

Marsh played 96 Tests and 92 ODIs between 1970-71 and 1983-84, making 355 Test dismissals and was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1982.

Marsh was head coach of the Australian Cricket Academy in 1990-2000 and was ECB National Academy Coach in 2002-05 and an England selector in 2003-05.

Bichel played 19 Tests between 1997 and 2004 as well as playing in 67 ODIs, including a member of Australia's successful 2003 ICC World Cup campaign.

Full-time

Howard, who started in his new full-time role this week, said Inverarity would start his new job as national selector on November 14 and leave for South Africa to link up with the Australian team on the same day.

The appointments of Howard, Inverarity, Marsh and Bichel follow CA Board approval of recommendations of the recent Australian Team Performance Review. AFP
