SLASSCOM to continue strategic partnership with EDEX for ninth Expo

Sri Lanka Association of Software and Service Companies SLASSCOM renewed its strategic partnership with EDEX for the second year, for the forthcoming EDEX Expo 2012.

SLASSCOM strives to create awareness on IT related new trends and employment opportunities among the youth through many faceted approaches to reach out to students, teachers and parents in many parts of the country. SLASSCOM has noted that while awareness on IT and BPO industry is improving, there remains an awareness gap about employment opportunities in the industry.

"All our endeavours are geared towards Sri Lanka's national goal of becoming a knowledge economy, achieving a target of US$1 billion in revenue and providing employment to over 100,000 by 2015. A key prerequisite for this growth to be realized is acceleration of human resources capacity development in the industry", said Chairman of SLASSCOM Sujiva Dewaraja.

"The SLASSCOM Future Careers initiative launched at EDEX 2011 is aimed at expanding the talent pool available to the industry as part of this capacity building programme. This year too the SLASSCOM Future Careers initiative at EDEX Expo 2012 will focus on connecting Sri Lankan youth to exciting job opportunities in the knowledge service industry for them to become truly global citizens", he said.

"At EDEX, SLASSCOM will educate students and parents about a wide array of options available in IT and BPO sectors, highlighting skills that will empower them to enter this industry and increase their earning potential. Students can also join online at www.FutureCareers.lk to learn about the industry. SLASSCOM invites industry professionals also to join at www.FutureCareers.lk to encourage and offer support and guidance to new entrants. We aim to leverage the EDEX platform to primarily focus on creating awareness among youth about benefits of selecting IT or BPO as a career path," Dewaraja said.

EDEX is the pioneering higher education and careers exhibition in Sri Lanka organized by Royal College Union attracting the largest and most diverse number of local and overseas participants held annually in Colombo and Kandy.

EDEX Chairman Kamal Abeysinghe said "With the global IT and BPO Industry outlook offering continuous growth potential, an increasing number of Sri Lankan firms are expanding to take advantage of the diverse prospects. This situation is expected to drive the demand for youth with requisite qualifications to join the industry and our continuing partnership with SLASSCOM will enable thousands of aspiring youth with local and overseas qualifications to seek suitable employment opportunities at the EDEX Expo 2012."

The ninth EDEX expo will be held on January 20, 21 and 22, 2012 at BMICH Colombo and on January 27 and 28 at the Kandy City Centre, Kandy, respectively. Further details could be obtained from E-mail: [email protected] and Website www.edex.lk
