St Lawrence’s beat Visakha - 40/30

St. Lawrence’s Convent, Wellawatte beat Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo by 40-30 at their home courts yesterday to become the group ‘B’ champions in the under-19 All Island Girls ‘A’ division cager championship. They defeated all other five teams in the group to remain unbeaten.

Winners took an early lead by scoring 14 points against six points from their rivals in the first quarter. Visakhians tried to make inroads in the second quarter but St. Lawrence’s girls kept them under control. Though the losers came back to the game in the second quarter, both teams were restricted for just 10 points, with the winners claiming the majority of six points. St. Lawrence’s team posted a ten point lead at half time (20-10).

Stiff contest displayed in the second half as both teams battled point to point. Visakhians played with all their strength to grab equal nine points in the third quarter followed by equal 11 points in the final quarter. Even though they played a better game in the latter half, St. Lawrence’s girls won the match by maintaining their 10 point first half lead till the end.

The low average scoring rate in the match was a testimony to the tense competition prevailed throughout the game. Natasha Perera added 17 points while Pooja Dharmakeerthi scored 7 points for the winning team. Daham Navodya and Hansani Madumalsha were the chief scorers for the losing team who contributed 16 points and 8 points respectively.
