Over one hundred graduates received their Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Software Engineering, Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Information Systems with Business Management, and Master of Science in Advanced Software Engineering.

Certain students outclassed themselves in achieving high accolades and top marks in their respective degrees. Geethika Cooray, BSc (Hons) Information Systems with Business Management and Sheran Corea, BSc (Hons) Software Engineering were awarded certificates of outstanding achievements and all rounded performance for each of their degree fields. These certificates were presented by Dr Myszka Guzkowska, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Westminster University.

Students who achieved a high aggregate in their respective degree courses and performed exceptionally well, upholding the quality of education imparted on them by IIT, were awarded gold medals. Champika Samarasinghe and Anisha Fernando bagged these medals in the BSc (Hons) Software Engineering and BSc (Hons) Information Systems with Business Management categories respectively. They received their medals from the founder of IIT, Dr. Gamini Wickramasinghe.

Dr. Gamini Wickremasinghe made a special award to Sheran Corea in recognition of the gold medal won by him in the tertiary category and the special award won for the best product using Microsoft technologies at the National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) competition.

Addressing the gathering, chief guest for the evening the Westminster University Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Myszka Guzkowska, was full of praise for the wonderful achievements of the IIT students and the prowess shown by them in the demanding and competitive field of study they engaged in. She said that the Westminster University has always set a high standard in terms of quality of education, not just in a theoretical sense but in a manner that is applicable in the real world. This high standard and quality sets the platform for new career opportunities that would shape the future for the University’s students. The University, she said, would continue to incorporate modern teaching methods and industry relevant structures into their curriculum, thereby further enriching the standard of education received by the student and ensuring that the degree earned at the end of the course would be practical and relevant in the given industry.

She said that knowledge and information were not the only ingredients learnt at the end of an IIT degree. Equal emphasis was also placed on the development of academic skills as well as soft skills that mould its students into all round achievers, able to fit into any given environment in the corporate world.

The benchmarks set by IIT, through the guidance of the Westminster University, have earned a reputation for itself. IIT students are much sought after and in fact have a tremendously astounding after degree success rate. Companies in which they spend their third year, which is their placement year, employ the students even before they have received their final year results. The projects submitted by all students as part of their final year assessment have been immensely successful, with the need for these projects to be protected for their Intellectual Property Rights. These factors certainly set IIT apart from its peers and its students are recognised and in demand on a national as well as global level.

The 2011, 17th convocation was a firm affirmation of the reputation that IIT enjoys and the Institute is proud to have successfully graduated another batch of knowledgeable, talented students who have been trained to think differently, adopt innovative measures and add value to the organisation and society they are in.
