Civil Aviation Ministry Secretary Ranjith De Silva said the RFP includes Mechanical Repair and Overhaul (MR0) training, pilot schools, cargo operations, duty free shops, restaurants and other aviation related activities. Civil De Silva said the airport will open in November 2012 and already several airlines have expressed their willingness to touch down in Mattala.

He said that this was discussed at the International Airline Route Forum which was held in Berlin recently.

The foundation stone for a new Airport hotel in Mattala too was laid and the government will release the land for the project soon.
