Scan Engineering to invest US $ 2 m on expansion

Keerthi Abeynayake

Scan Engineering (Pvt) Ltd is set to invest US $ 2 million for the expansion of its office and service facilities in 2012. Scan Engineering and Scan Agencies Managing Director Keerthi Abeynayake said the company is hoping to complete the expansion by mid 2012 and will create job opportunities for around 150 engineers and technicians in various fields.

The company is also looking at possibilities to establish a branch in the Maldives whilst considering diversifying into various ventures. In some cases this will be diversification with related products and some new products as well.

The company will expand its presence to all the fast developing cities in the country such as Hambantota, Jaffna and Kandy shortly.

Abeynayake said the company has been receiving many enquiries for the upgrading of air-conditioning systems, elevators and diesel generators of the hotels in the country since January this year due to the escalating arrival of tourists. “In addition, we have received the requirements of at least fifty new major projects, which include new hotels, commercial buildings, super markets, restaurants, banquet halls, factories and others,” he said.

Due to the prevailing peaceful situation and the political stability in the country, many world renowned companies and individuals are now showing interest to come to Sri Lanka for investment and to do business.

As a result, most of the Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) and Heat, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning Companies (HVAC) in the country are doing well and the competition amongst these companies is increasing.

“Since Sri Lanka is a fast developing country in the region the opportunities are amazing. Sri Lankan companies should be able to take advantage of this.

“The country needs qualified and experienced engineers and highly skilled technicians,” he said.

It is the responsibility of the government to create an environment for Sri Lankan engineers and technicians that migrated to other countries in search of jobs to return to Sri Lanka.”

Scan engineering is involved in many development projects in Sri Lanka and it has allowed them to introduce many new technologies to the country which include energy efficient and environmentally friendly air-conditioning equipment, high-tech elevator systems, electronically controlled diesel generators and modern newspaper printing presses. Scan Engineering is working closely with many world renowned companies and is the exclusive distributor and agent in Sri Lanka and Maldives for ThyssenKrupp Elevators, Escalators, Moving Walks and Passenger Boarding Bridges.
