Dangaya and Punchi Andare at the Lionel Wendt

Prof Ediriweera Sarachchandra’s youngest daughter Yashodhara Sarachchandra and Kusumsiri Liyanaarachchi’s latest theatrical experience Dangaya and Punchi Andare commenced production in Colombo.

These two children’s plays were created by Yashodhara and Kusumsiri whilst in Australia and has been performed many times to Australian audiences. Their intention to share this theatrical experience with Sri Lankan audiences of children and adults alike is the main reason behind the current production.

Yashodhara is currently following the Doctoral research programme at the La Trobe University in Melbourne. She played the role of Maname Queen in Prof Sarachchandra’s Maname for over thirteen years. With several national awards to her name, Yashodhara has been actively involved in professional Sinhala theatre for the past thirty one years. Her husband Kusumsiri Liyanaarachchi was awarded Best Play, Direction and script for his play Okkomalla Kollakala at the 1996 State Children’s Drama Festival. He also received Best play, Direction and Script for his play “Sapathni” at the 1999 State Drama festival short play category.

Dangaya and Punchi Andare will be first staged on November 5 and 6 at 3.30 and 6.45 pm at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.

This will be a Theatre experience that can be enjoyed both by children and adults equally. The objective of the plays is to cultivate a healthy appreciation for drama among young audiences.

At a time when notions of children’s plays are limited to children alone, Dangaya and Punchi Andare will be a fresh breath of air as both plays can be enjoyed by young and old alike. Both plays have been made enhanced with colourful costumes, pleasant music and vivid choreography.

It is sure to be an enjoyable experience for the whole family. Dangaya and Punchi Andare is a theatre experience that encourages the whole family to participate.

The actors include Sunil Thilakaratne, Jayanath Bandara, Pradeep Ramavikrama, Pramila Samarakoon, Kalum Kalhari Gamlath, Madhuranga Sri Lal, Nadeesha Sandamali, Ruchira Sooriarachchi, Himashi Vithanage, Nadeeka Kumudu Kumari, Vishva Thilakaratne, Randika Chathurani, Sachithri Athukorala, Devinda Wickramasinghe, Akalanka Prabhashwara, Dulanjan Dissanayake, Sachithra Karunaratne, Lakshmi Dissanayake, Chaminda Mirihalla, Manisha Dukgannarala, Dinushi Vithanage and Darshana Ubeysekara. Stage management is by Himashi Vithanage and Darshana Ubeysekara, Make-up is by Vishwa Thilakaratne.

Dangaya and Punchi Andare scripts are by Kusumsiri Liyanaarachchi, music compositions by Yashodhara Sarachchandra and music direction by Shantha.
