He was speaking at a symposium on Venezuela and its leader Hugo
Chavez at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute recently.
The minister pointed out that Venezuela has progressed immensely
under President Hugo Chavez. "Sri Lanka should take Venezuela as an
example and follow in their footsteps. It is more effective than trying
to find development models from history and the Western world," he said
"Sri Lanka will be able to have a slow but steady sustainable
development by following leaders like Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. The
time has come to assert that the earth belongs to all humans and animals
to enjoy its resources equally," he said.
Sri Lanka's future cannot be handed over to separatists, the
underworld or politicians with criminal connections, he said.
Latin American countries' attitude towards the West should be a
lesson for Asia, the minister said adding that Sri Lanka needs to be
freed from the West.
