Be flag bearers of a prosperous nation
Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne called on the Hindu community to
become flag bearers of a prosperous nation which has established justice
overcoming unrighteousness.
In a Deepavali message, the Premier said: “I have great pleasure in
issuing this message of greetings to the Hindu devotees worldwide on the
occasion of the Deepavali festival
they are celebrating today with great faith and devotion.
“While the Deepavali day has been assigned every year to pay homage
to God Krishna, the moral Saviour of the Hindu community, it’s main
theme is to defeat unrighteousness and uphold truth and justice. It is
God Krishna who protected Hindu devotees who were under obligation to
Narakasuran.
“It is President Mahinda Rajapaksa who ended the dark era in which no
religious festival could be held peacefully in Sri Lanka. Since the war
has ended we all now have the opportunity to engage in religious
activities with our children in joy and freedom.
“We should not forget that it is owing to this great leader that we
are able to celebrate Deepavali on this great day. ‘Instead of repenting
about children who escaped from the back door as child soldiers freedom
has now been ensured for all to sit at the table with children and enjoy
a meal.
“Therefore I wish to remind my Tamil brothren that this is no the
time to hark on the past.
“Today we are confronted with the battle to develop the country.
All communities should unite and become shareholders of that
development war.
“Become a flag bearer of a prosperous nation which has established
justice overcoming unrighteousness.
It is then that you who are a born Hindu will become a true follower
of God Krishna, wish you all a happy Deepavali.”
