Torn between singing and acting

Daham Kandanarrachchi is a dashing young man who stands at 6’4 and is a self confessed movie buff. Daham who is also very much into Hollywood has starred in various commercials and envisions a career in acting. This young man counts Adam Sandler, Hugh Jackman, George Clooney and Al Pacino as his favorites. The Daily News News met this Singer/Actor/Model to discuss his pursuits.

“I would love to play a villain on screen. I guess I have the villainous look ! I like to play both characters : villains and heroes. I would love to play fictional characters; characters with super powers. Like Marvel characters like X Men. I would love to play Gambit by the way” said Daham enthusiastically.

For those you readers who don’t know Gambit, he is the smooth talking, gambling mutant who can turn anything into an explosive. Daham also maintains that he can also do romantic characters who are quiet. He says that if he plays a bad guy, he can do it, hammering people. “What appeals to me is magic, sorcery. Something unnatural. Something you don’t see everyday. The movie should have a story as well,” stated Daham.

Daham who started his career in 2009 is the son of Chandrakumara Kandanarrachchi well known singer. Daham considers himself an actor. Because of music he doesn’t have time to go into acting. He also received many offers. Recently he was asked to do a main role for a mega teledrama by a director which meant shooting from six in the morning to six in the evening for six months. Daham is waiting for his music career to be established so he can concentrate on acting in the near future.

“I have singing in my blood. I started with modeling and acting for commercials but music was in me. My father released a very popular song called “Age Sinahawa Thahanam”. The second version is called “Hanguma”. This is the second version of my father’s hit song. I also want to talk about my latest song. When I started getting into music I was more oriental, my father’s style. Now I’m moving onto my own style. I released a song early this year called “Nothing is going to stop me now” added Daham. Daham has three versions of the song: English, Sinhalese and Spanish. The English version was released and went to number one. That is his latest song up to now.

“I can sing in Spanish because I grew up with Spanish music. To a certain extent I taught myself Spanish but mostly through the computer where I used to translate. I have that Spanish ability. I’m proud to say that I wrote my own Spanish song,” said Daham.

Daham also elaborated on what it means to be a model. He feels that in order to be a model you need confidence. You have to walk the walk and talk the talk. You need to maintain your appearance as well as having a personality.

“My philosophy is no matter what keep your head straight. Don’t let anyone get in the way of what you want to be in life. If you have a goal stay focused no matter what and one day you will get it. You have to really work at what you want to get. Never postpone anything. Something you need to do right now, do it then and there. Stay focused and be the best you can be. You have to believe in yourself,” explained Daham.

Daham also stated that he grew up with Ricky Martin. Even before Ricky Martin became popular Daham was listening to his songs. And that music was Spanish music. Ricky Martin influenced him a lot. His style revolves around Ricky Martin’s style.

Daham’s bread and butter is his job at a Freight Forwarding Company called Aramex. He is in charge of cargo operations.

“Balance is the key when you want to be a singer, actor and model. Since I work at an international company I can do most of this after 5 pm and 6 pm. What I do is I preplan everything. That is essentially the key. On a typical normal day I come back home and chill out. I’m a very big fan of playstation. One of my favorite games is Mortal Kombat. I go home and play games and I listen to music,” concluded Daham.
