The country needs to be self-sufficient and this cannot be done with
unproductive lands. Farmers should use organic fertilizer more and avoid
chemical fertilizer as much as possible, said Senior Vice Chairman of
the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Good Governance and Infrastructure Senior
Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka.
He was addressing the Vap Magul festival held recently at Talagala,
Meepagala.
Minister Wickramanayaka said, "this is the time we have to join and
work hard on behalf of our country to make it self-sufficient."
"Doing away with chemical fertilizer and using compost maybe
controversial, but this needs to be done," he said. A ceremony was also
held to donate fertilizer, egg-seed sacks and agro-equipment to farmers.
Kalutara District Parliamentarian Vidura Wickramanayaka, Western
Provincial Council Member Kithsiri Kahatapitiya, Horana Pradeshiya Sabha
Vice Chairman Ashoka Ranathunga and a large crowd of students and
residents participated. |
