District Secretaries’ powers increased

Cabinet approval has been granted for a Cabinet memorandum presented
to the Cabinet by Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister W.D.J.
Seneviratne to increase the powers of District Secretaries, Cabinet
Spokesman and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.
Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing held at the Government
Information Department yesterday, Minister Rambukwella said that the
main objective of the proposal was to enable the district administration
to suit the necessities of the government’s development programmes.
Under this proposal all relevant regulations and administrative
practices will be revised for taking actions by the respective
ministries to appoint District Secretaries as Additional Secretaries of
their ministries, vesting powers of the secretaries in them and further
for allowing the District Secretary to use the designation as Government
Agent concurrently.
Accordingly, vesting of powers (to Divisional Secretaries) Act Number
58 of 1992 (Special Provisions) Bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman
will be presented in Parliament for approval, Minister Rambukwella said. |
