Plastic recycling centre in Balangoda

The foundation stone was laid recently to construct a Polythene and Plastic Recycling Centre in Balangoda under the national post consumer plastic waste management project implemented by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA). The centre is being established at a solid waste management project ground at Bankiyawatte, Balangoda.

The estimated cost of the Centre is Rs six million. The CEA provides financial and technical assistance and training for workers. The aim of the project is to reproduce plastic as a material from collected waste polythene and plastic and to sell recycled plastic to the private sector. DM


Shankar’s Int’l Children’s contest

The Shankar’s International Children’s Competition 2012, in the categories of writing, painting and drawing, is open to children all over the world born on or after January 1, 1996. The competition was started in 1949 by late Shri Shankar Pillai, a celebrated cartoonist and recipient of several awards including Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan. CEB recovers Rs 30.78m as fines

Ceylon Electricity Board officials have collected Rs 30.78 million by way of fines in their raids in September.

The Power and Energy Ministry says this amount surpasses the income earned by way of fines in July and August. About 338 cases of misuses of electricity by tampering meters have been reported during September. Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has made arrangements to nab power pirates in effective way to achieve the objective of making the Electricity Board a profit making venture. Old building gutted

An old building which had maintained a printing press and several other industries a few years back at Kadukanna in Telijjawila, Matara, had been destroyed by a sudden fire which had occurred around 9 p.m on Thursday, Akuressa police said. The cause of the sudden fire had not been revealed. Akuressa police are investigating.


Puttalam gets Rs 440m

The Economic Development Ministry has set apart Rs 440 million for development work in the Puttalam district under the Gama Neguma programme this year. Rs 130 million has been allocated for water projects and roads and electricity programmes, Rs 108 million for sanitation work in government schools and Rs 86.4 million for maternity clinics in the district.


New bus service

A new bus service from the Nuwara Eliya main bus stand to Shantipura, Moon Plain, Kalukelle and Boralanda has been started by the Nuwara Eliya SLTB depot recently.

Meanwhile, Electricity will be provided for Malliappuwa-Nelugaha-Diyamilla villages in the Walapane divisional secretariat division. The Government has allocated Rs 4.5 million for this.
