'Text books will be distributed on time'

The Education Publications Department of the Education Ministry will complete the distribution process of school text books prior to the commencement of the school vacation in December, Education Publications Commissioner NMJ Pushpakumara said.

The commissioner said, all measures are in place to hand over all required school text books to every student in time.

Accordingly, text books for 2012 are being dispatched to provincial distribution centres aiming to complete the text book distribution process by the end of November.

The Education Publications Department has taken steps to print 34 million copies of school text books which are required for 2012. Of this amount, a large number of books have already been printed and received by the Education Publications Department.

The Education Ministry has allocated Rs. 3,000 million for the printing process. Last year's text book requirement was 27 million.

"The Education Publications Department has targeted to complete the printing by the end of October. Printed text books are being dispatched regularly to provincial distribution centres to ensure the smooth functioning of the distribution process. The Education Publication Department is concern of the deadlines since text books have to be in students' hands on time," Pushpakumara noted.

Meanwhile, the Education Publications Department has taken several measures to increase the quality of school text books as there were some issues relating to the quality of text books.

The Education Sector Development Project of the World Bank is also assisting in improving the quality of text books.
