Priyanka KURUGALA
Danangi Fernando bears testimony to yet another brilliant example
among Down’s Syndrome children. Still at 13 years, Danangi has shown
many developments, quite an improvement for a child of her age. Her
third dancing show, Narthana Rekha 3, will be held at the Bishop’s
college Auditorium on October 16 at 6 pm.

Student of both Lyceum International School, Nugegoda, and Miranda
Hemalatha’s Diri Daru Piyasa, Danangi could develop a number of talents.
She was five years when she entered Diri Daru Piyasa. Now studying at
Grade eight, Danangi can obtain around 30 marks for each subject. Making
embroiders and drawing arts are among her talents.
Her first dancing show was held in 2008. She was the second Down’s
syndrome child to perform such an event in the country. The show lit up
hopes of a brighter future for the little girl.
“She was a poor child. No one, not even her parents, thought she
would be what she is today. But she had a good family background to
sharpen her skills.” Miranda Hemalatha shared her experience with Daily
News.
Danangi’s mother Nelum Senanayake is a lawyer and her father Nihal
Damian Fernando is a Navy captain. Her grandfather had worked in the
judicial service and her grandmother still makes all her dancing
costumes. Danangi’s only sister, elder than her, is a law student at the
Colombo University.
Her strength has been her family, Hemalatha opined. Danangi is
further practising her skills. She has developed her speech abilities,
which she now handles with much dexterity. In communication Danangi
continues to prove efficient in speech communication. She has grown to
be a kind and sensitive girl.
Narthana Rekha 3 funds will be channeled to build a hospital for
Down’s Syndrome children in Kindelpitiya, Katukurunda Road. This is a
Diridaru Piyasa project. This project, Danangi’s parents believe, will
be great accruing more merit for Danangi.
