National Children’s Drama Festival 2011

The National Children’s Drama Festival 2011 was held at the John de Silva Theatre on October 6. Showcasing talents of budding child artistes from across the island this year’s festival this presented plays in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

The event was organised by the Culture and Arts Ministry, Cultural Affairs Department and the State Drama panel. Around 41 plays in the limited and open categories were staged from September 10 to 20. Around 25 Sinhala dramas, 10 Tamil dramas and six English dramas comprised the line up. This was the first time in history that the children’s dramas from all languages were staged on one platform at the event.

It also marked the highest participation of children’s dramas producers from the North and East. The festival is open to the public and is free of charge.

Speaking at the event Culture and Arts Minister T B Ekanayake said that children’s talents, creativity and new ideas nurture the industry. The National Children’s Drama Festival is held for the 16th year.

Sinhala drama (Limited category)

* Best Children’s Drama - Gamage Pubudu Subashana Kurugala’s Chooti Baba presented by the Horana Vidyaratne College.
* Best script - Gamage Pubudu Subashana Kurugala for Chooti Baba
* Best actor - M Dulaj Chamara who for Chooti Baba’s role
* Best actress award - Avishka Sulochani for Uncleuth Ape Seeya Vagemai

Sinhala drama (Open category)

Dance performance

Nipuni Narmada receives her award for best supporting actress in Mama Venama Malak from Chandani Seneviratne and Palitha Silva.

* Best drama - Sonduru Lokupothagama’s Nuwange Mithuro Hathdena presented by Giriulla Child and Youth Arts Faculty
* Best script - Palitha Lokupothagama for Nuwange Mithuro Hathdena
* Best actor - Sonduru Lokupothagama for Nuwan’s role
* Best actress - Thisuri Lavanya for Gimhani’s role in Nalaka Swarnatileke’s Mama Venama Malak Tamil drama (Limited category)
* Best drama – T Gowreeshwaram’s Innaindu Vala presented by Karuwkkeni Vigneshwaram Vidyalam
* Best script – T Gowreeshwaram for Innaindu Vala
* Best actor – W Jayanthapratheen for Monkey 2’s role in Inandu Vala
* Best actress – Vidyalam Chathumali Isanka Kaluarachchi for the role of cat in Apoorva Cack

Tamil drama (Open category)

* Best drama – M Kalidasa’s Kakkain Koodu
* Best script – M Kalidasa for Kakkain Koodu
* Best actor – R Selvaraj Culas for crow father’s role in Tgatha Sonna Kadai
* Best actress – R Nishanthini for Maan’s role in Maan

English drama (Limited category)

* Best drama – D Kumarage’s Masha and bear presented by Bombuwela Dharmaloka Maha Vidyalaya
* Best script – Anupa Seuwandi Kumarage for Masha and bear
* Best actor – K D Chathura Sandaruvan for bear’s role in Masha and bear
* Best actress – Himashi Tharaka for Masha’s role in Masha and bear

English drama (Open category)

* Best drama – P S Mithrarathne’s Devil and the doll
* Best script - P S Mithrarathne for Devil and the doll
* Best actor – Buddhika Chathuranga for Baby devil in Devil and the doll
* Best actress – Negumi Shenali Chandrasiri for Gayani’s role in Friends
