Sand transporter fined

A person was arrested by the Ingiriya police for transporting sand in a lorry without a permit.

The suspect, W Lasantha, a resident of Boralugoda, Poruwedanda was fined Rs 50,000 by Horana Magistrate Mahinda Ranasinghe. The magistrate also ordered that the stock of sand be confiscated and the lorry released to the owner.


Two netted for cutting trees

Ingiriya police arrested two suspects who were allegedly engaged in cutting Batodomba trees in the Nachchimale forest reservation.

The suspects were residents of Ingiriya, Maha Ingiriya area. They will be produced before the Horana Magistrate Court.


Blood donation

The annual blood donation campaign organized by the 70-75 batch of Ananda College will be held on October 10 from 8 am to 2 pm at the college premises. This year’s blood donation campaign, held for the 15th time, is to mark 125th Founder’s Day. A Rs 50,000 worth life insurance certificate will be presented to each donor.


Fund raiser

The 189th Maroon and Silver Fund-Raiser Dinner Dance, organized by the Old Boys Association of Sri Jayewardenepura Vidyalaya (Christian College), Kotte will be held at Water’s Edge, Battaramulla today from 8 pm, with the musical group Gypsies entertaining the gathering.

Faizal Bonso will compere the event. The dinner dance is held to mark the school’s 189th anniversary.



K A S Kodikara

She seeks help

A scan on the brain of K A S Kodikara of 17/157/3, Udayapura, Weeragoda Central Camp, Ampara revealed a right hypothalamic glioma. At the moment she gets five fits per day. She had complex partial seizures from the age of three.

Neuro-navigation guidance is important to effectively perform a surgery on her. This facility is only available at the Asiri Surgical Hospital.

This operation costs around Rs 700,000 inclusive of hospital charges. She is unable to foot the bill and requests help.

Timber racket busted

Dambulla Police raided an illicit timber saw mill in the Ridibediella forest reserve and arrested a large haul of valuable sawn timber worth over Rs 200,000 with three suspects.

Police investigation revealed that the racket had been carried out by them for a long period.


Minister visits villages to look into problems

Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda has started visiting villages of the Jaffna peninsula by bicycle to look into the problems faced by the people.

The minister visited Vasanthapuram and Niththiyaoli areas recently. He explored as to how he could be of help to them to solve their problems. He instructed officials to attend to the renovation work of the “Anna” Community Centre, to fill up water stagnant places, to construct public toilets and to fix bulbs to street lamps. The minister said he will expedite the issuing of permanent deeds to the lands allotted recently. Jaffna Mayor Yogeswary Pathkuanarajah, EPDP Jaffna organizer Kamalendran and Jaffna Deputy Mayor Thurairajah Illango also participated.


‘Protection of every child, our responsibility’

Caritas Sri Lanka marked Universal Children’s’ Day on 1st October with a group of around 100 student leaders, teachers and parents at the SEDEC auditorium in Colombo.

Education Director and Special Programs in the Human Rights Commission Shirani Rajapakse said there are special laws in the country to protect child rights and mechanisms such as the National Child Protection Authority are in place to give effect to these laws. She told students that they have a right to free Primary Education. Physical and mental well-being are their rights. She said if they have no time to play, it amounts to a denial of their right.

Caritas Program Officer for Child Protection Rev Sr Nilanthi Ranasinghe said children teach child-like trust and many other things, and say in their helplessness. They are valuable members of society and they need love and respect to grow to their full potential.

Students, teachers and parents took part in group discussions where they explored their own understanding of child protection and what they expect from each other in their inter-relationships.


Jainudeen Memorial Hall to be renovated

The oldest building of the Malays in Badulla called Jainudeen Memorial Hall is to be renovated and restored to its past glory, Parliamentarian A H M Azwer said at a reception accorded to him by the Malay unit of the SLFP in Badulla yesterday.

He said funds will be allocated from the decentralized budget for the renovation of this building. Azwer said this building served as the centre of cultural and religious activities of the Malays in Badulla for the last 100 years.

Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Tuan Booso, representing the Malay Association, A H M Farook of the SLFP Malay unit, Uva Provincial Council Member Ajith Alahakoon, former Deputy Mayor of Badulla M Jafeer also spoke.
