Five suspects re-remanded

Five suspects who had been remanded in connection with abducting a Chilaw businessman and demanding a ransom of Rs. 5 million were yesterday further remanded till October 12.

The Criminal Investigation Department had arrested the five suspects including a bogus police officer with a weapon.

One suspect is a schoolboy, CID DIG said. The bogus police officer was wearing a police uniform and had a weapon in his possession at the time of his arrest, he said.

A special team directed by CID DIG and led by a senior woman police officer arrested the suspects while collecting the ransom from the businessman at Ja-Ela police area recently.

Investigations revealed that one suspect is a close relation of the businessman's wife.
