The politically bankrupt UNP is trying to create divisions within the
Muslim community to attain short term selfish goals, Environment Deputy
Minister Abdul Cader said yesterday.

He said that the UNP which was facing imminent defeat at the
forthcoming local polls, was now trying to flare up divisions within the
Muslim community, by spreading false rumours to gain petty political
mileage. He urged Muslims not to be misled by such rumours.
He predicted a comfortable victory for the UPFA including the
traditional UNP strongholds Colombo and Kandy, where there is a large
presence of Muslim voters.
The deputy minister said that repeated blunders and defeats by the
UNP had resulted in the party cadre losing confidence in its ability to
fulfill their expectations.
This had resulted in a large number of Muslims leaving the UNP
including a number of prominent leaders. The deputy minister who himself
left the UNP, pointed out that even the SLMC had joined the government.
He called upon all Muslims to support the UPFA and vote for the
'Betel Leaf' at the polls, in the interest of their region's future
development and progress and welfare of its people.
The deputy minister said that the government had taken steps to
restore destroyed mosques in the North and East, resettle evicted
Muslims in their native lands, and also had fully supported to enhance
pilgrimages of Muslims.
He recalled that it was the government led by President Mahinda
Rajapaksa which paved the way for all communities to live in unity,
friendship and harmony by defeating the forces of terror.
