Vehicles damaged from inferior petrol:

Compensation deadline extended

The Petroleum Industries Ministry has extended the time frame given to vehicle owners to apply for compensations for their vehicles, by two weeks, which were reportedly damaged due to the use of low quality petrol.

Ministry sources said vehicle owners can submit their applications for compensation until October 14. The ministry has received over 3,000 claim letters upto date.

Vehicle owners are required to provide their identity cards, insurance policies, petrol bills and repair bills for the process, sources said.

According to Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha in the case a vehicle owner does not possess petrol bills, to indicate that he or she had purchased fuel, he or she can submit an affidavit.

The committee appointed to probe the substandard petrol issue, has recommended a payment of Rs 50,000 for damaged vehicles. Ministry sources said that claims over Rs 50,000 will also be taken into consideration.
