Championships:
Sri Lankan spikers create history

Sri Lankan volleyball players created history yesterday by entering
the super-eight stage of the 16th Asian Men’s Volleyball Championships
which is being held in Teheran, Iran when they beat Indonesia 3 sets to
1 yesterday (25-21, 28-26, 20-25, 21-25, 15-13).
The match was one of the most exciting so far in the tournament. The
first two sets saw the Lankans making a strong approach but the third
and fourth sets were won by the Indonesians. But Sri Lanka managed to
finish the fifth set in their favour.
Earlier on Thursday, the strong Sri Lankan serve caused problems for
Uzbekistans as the latter went down in straight sets (25-2, 25-13,
25-22). For the winners their skipper Sameera Dissanayake and Janitha
Surath excelled in spiking and blocking.
“We played according to our plan to win. Our weapon was our spiking
and defence,” Sri Lanka coach W.M.S. Kumara said. “S.A.J. Surath Janitha
and our captain, Sameera Disanayaka worked hard as planned. Our
opponent’s reception ability was not good, so we got good points on our
service.”
Dilan Perera elected to AVC Board of Admin
The Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation President and Minister of Foreign
Employment Promotion and Welfare, Dilan Perera was unanimously elected
to the board of administration of the Asian Volleyball Confederation at
the 19th AVC general assembly held at Chinese Taipei.
This is considered as a great personal achievement for the well-being
of the national game of Sri Lanka. Earlier in July this year, Minister
Perera was elected as the President of the Asian Central Zone Volleyball
Association bringing great credit to the island.
Besides, Perera is the first Sri Lankan to be elected to a high
office at the Asian Volleyball Confederation. According to Minister
Perera, this appointment is a result of the development activities
