One netted for transporting timber illegally

A person was arrested by the Ingiriya Range Forest Officers when he was allegedly transporting a mahogani timber stock without a valid license.

The suspect, W. Jagath Kusm, was fined Rs. 20,000 by Horana Magistrate Mahinda Ransingha. The magistrate also ordered to confiscate the stock of mahogani wood worth Rs 2,14,945.78.


Kalutara Dhamma schools to open

Kalutara district Shasanarakshaka Balamandala Secretary Ven Gonaduwe Gunananda Thera said all Dhamma schools in the Kalutara district which were closed indefinitely to protest the opening of a liquor shop near a Dhamma school in Wadduwa will be opened.

The Thera said the court decision in this regard was satisfactory and Dhamma school principals agreed to open schools from September 25, he said.


 

Help her

P.A. Sachini Nilunika (12) of Thelabugahawatta, Kapugama East, Devinuwara is a cancer patient who has undergone surgery chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Although she is clinically normal at present, she has to undergo regular follow up and anti-epileptic treatment.

As Sachini's family has to incur heavy expenditure for her post-surgery treatment, they request philanthropists and the public for assistance.

All contributions should be remitted to account number 71276241 at the Bank of Ceylon Devinuwara branch.


Food poisoning hospitalizes students

Over 20 students of Warakapola Buddhist School were admitted to Warakapola Base Hospital yesterday following complaints of vomiting and nausea due to food poisoning.

Grade Two students had fallen sick after consuming a soup, sources told the Daily News.


Prathibhaprabha at Methodist

The students of Methodist College, Colombo will present Prathibhaprabha, an oriental dance recital on September 29 and 30 from 6 pm at the college auditorium.

Choreographed and arranged entirely by the staff and students, under the direction of Nadeeka Perera and Chandima Paththirage, the performance celebrates traditional dance forms of Sri Lanka and showcases both Kandyan and low country dance.

The performance is presented by students from Grade 6 upto the GCE Advanced Level who study dancing as a subject.

Tickets are available at the school office.


Inauguration

The inauguration of the Distance Learning Diploma in Human Rights and Peace Studies (2011/2012 batch) will be held today at 10 am at the NLT, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo.

The diploma is conducted by the Centre for the Study of Human Rights, University of Colombo.

Students of Lyceum International School, Hendala have organised a walk from Alwis Town, Wattala to Hendala Junction today to mark the 10th anniversary of their school, said its principal Kumari Grero.


Camp until September 30

The Jaipur Foot artificial limb fitting camp at the Divisional Hospital, Kondavil, Jaffna will be held until September 30.Consulate General of India in Jaffna in association with the Northern Provincial Council Health Ministry has been conducting the camp since September 3. The limb fitment service is provided by 20 experts from the Jaipur based Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samti (BMVSS).

At the camp, services such as fitting of prosthesis, orthosis, provision of calipers and crutches are provided free of charge. Anybody interested in availing of the services can directly go to the Jaipur Foot Artificial Limb Fitment Camp at the Divisional Hospital, Kondavil. At the camp, dimensions of limbs of each individual are taken and at the make-shift workshop set up by the BMVSS, artificial limbs are tailor made specially by moulding and other processes.

The Sri Lanka-India Society is hosting a dinner tomorrow at Cinnamon Lakeside, Sir Cittampalam A Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 2. Indian High Commissioner Ashok K Kantha will be the chief guest while The Hindu Managing Editor N Ram will be the guest of honour.


Book launch

A book written by Ven Puwakpitiye Pagnaratana Thera will be launched tomorrow at 2.30 pm at the Sri Subadraramaya in Panadura, Keselwatta.

A special sermon will be delivered by Ven Prof Kahapola Sugatharatana. Senior Lecturer Daya Rohana Athukorale will also speak.

Dr Amaratunga, Consultant Eye Surgeon of the Vijaya Kumaratunga Memorial Hospital, has conducted eye clinics in Vavuniya, Puttalam, Kurunegala and Pallama and over 1,000 patients have turned up for treatment at each clinic.


Carrom players fined for obstruction

Four persons produced before court on a charge of playing carrom on the road, obstructing traffic, were fined Rs 1,000 each by Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Lanka Jayaratne yesterday.

Imposing the fines, the judge observed that people should not obstruct the main road by playing games. Attorney-at-Law Sudharshini Gunaratne who appeared for the suspects pleaded in mitigation and said that they were not obstructing the main roads by playing carrom.

Former Jaffna College Principal Rajan Kadirgamar no more

Leading educationist, Rajan Kadirgamar who was associated with Jaffna College, Vaddukkoddai for several decades as student, teacher and principal has passed away in Canada.

Born on October 27, 1928 he was in his 83rd year when he passed away in a Toronto hospital on September 17.

The funeral will take place in Scarborough, Toronto. His remains will be at the Chapel in Highland Funeral Home, 3280, Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough. The funeral service will be at the Anglican Church of St Margaret in the Pines on 4130 Lawrence Avenue East, Scarborough, Toronto today at 10.00 am followed by interment at the St Margarets Church cemetery.
