Carlton Basketball Club clinched their fourth consecutive win in the
tournament when they beat Old Bens team (68-51) in their Carlton Cup
Division ‘A’ Basketball encounter at the Police Park courts yesterday.
The game was scaled to both sides at different stages.
The three point line man to man defense of the Old Bens players were
very effective in the first quarter where Carlton players found it
difficult to deliver the ball to the ring. The Old Benedictines stole
the ball several times inside their ‘D’ but soon Carlton players leveled
the attack and were one point behind at the end of the first quarter
(14-15). Carlton team played a much organized game in the second quarter
and took the lead to register a 14 point lead at the half time (41-27).
The winners scored 27 points while allowing their opponents to add 12
points in the second quarter. Eventhough Old Bens scored 14 points
against 10 from the winners in the third quarter they were tamed in the
final quarter by the strong Carlton team who registered a 17 points lead
in the end.
R. Ruwanga (14 points) and P. Pushpakumara (12 points) were the
highest scores for the winners while K. Perera who added 15 points and
and L. Siri (13 points) were the chief scorers for the losers.
Michelites BC recovered from a dreadful set back in the first quarter
(12-17) to defeat Old Anandians BC (69-45) in their Division ‘B’ match
at the Police Deport. They got into their rhythm in the second quarter
and restricted the opponents to seven points each in the second and
third quarters while scoring 22 and 15 points in both respectively. The
Anandians were 10 points behind at half time (34-24).
The winners gradually increased the gap in the third and final
quarters to win the game with a 24 point lead.

the winners while D. Menaka (26 points and K. Chamara (13 points) were

points ahead mid way (34-25). They steadied their attack and defense in
the second half and won the match with a 22 point margin.
