The chief guests were Walter Mendis and his wife who had contributed
for the refurbishment of the Boys Development Centre, Maharagama. The
original buildings and the land at Maharagama Centre were donated in
1930 by Abdul Gafoor, one of Sri Lanka's leading philanthropit.
Child Protection Society Chairman S S Wijeratne told the gathering,
including boys and the girls of the two homes, that the Child Protetion
Society was founded in 1928 by British Philanthropist Sir John Parsons,
with the patronage of the then British Parliament as Asia's pioneering
organization dedicated to Child Protection. "The CPS has maintained two
model child development centres, one for boys at Maharagama and one for
girls at Rukmalgama.
"Generations of children without parental care have benefited from
the care and education provided in the centres," he said .
"The Child Protection Society is perhaps the only child protection
institute in the world, which has an old students' union which is
actively involved with the current student welfare and education," the
CPS chairman said.
Celebrations 2011 will also honour the most senior member of the
society Anoma Fernando, the CPS chairman added. |
