Students of Sirimavo Bandaranaike
Vidyalaya, Colombo who sat the Grade 5 Scholarship
examination this year scramble over the heads and shoulders
of their colleagues to see their rankings after the results
sheet was displayed on the school notice board yesterday.
The school has recorded a 98 percent success rate this year.

SLTB, private buses, a bane to pedestrians, drivers

Pedestrians and vehicle drivers face many problems due to SLTB and
private buses picking up passengers on the wayside in the Ampara
District. While different rates too are being charged, tickets are not
issued. Office workers and students are also inconvenienced by buses
stopping over for long periods both at Karaitivu and Hijra Junction in
Sammanthurai, to pick up passengers.
Army assists health improvement

The Army organized a dental clinic and health educational programme
for schoolchildren and teachers in Point Pedro.
An officer of the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna, stated that
it was one of the series of health programmes held in the area.
He said many health programmes were held in the same area and these
programmes were held in different parts of Jaffna to uplift the health
condition of children and the public.
Pedestrian dies in building collapse
A pedestrian who was injured when the front portion of a two storeyed
building at Bodhiraja Mawatha Maligawatte collapsed on her, succumbed to
her injuries on admission to the Colombo National hospital on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Batadurage Niroshanee, 35, of Navagampura,
Grandpass.
Bicycles for plantation children
Bicycles will be distributed among students of plantation schools in
the Nuwara Eliya district by Economic Development Deputy Minister Muthu
Sivalingam on September 19 at 10 am at the Nuwara Eliya district
secretariat.
The Economic Development Ministry received 450 bicycles from a Non
Government Organization in Japan for the 'Mathuyuga Surakuma' programme
under the Mahinda Chinthana which is being implemented under the
ministry.
The bicycles will be distributed on the direction of Economic
Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Livestock and Rural Community
Development Minister Arumugam Thondaman.
Maliduwa Somasiri Thera passes away
Chief incumbent of the Sri Sudharmaramaya, Wellawatta Ven Matara
Maliduwa Somasiri Thera passed away at the age of 83 on Thursday. The
Thera was the founder member of the Sri Sudharmaramaya and has rendered
a great service to the Buddha Sasana. He built houses and provided
wheelchairs for the needy.
The remains are lying at Sri Sudharmaramaya, Wellawatta.
The funeral will be held at the Galkissa Cemetery tomorrow at 3.00
pm.
Certificate in Computer studies
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department of the Open
University will begin a certificate programme in Professional Computer
Applications on October 9.
The first batch of the programme started in 2010.
The programme will provide a wide knowledge on anatomy of computers,
operating systems and commonly used applications, the Internet,
Microsoft Office Applications, Web application development (with PHP,
MySQL, CSS) and management, Graphics and animations for web
applications, Content Management Systems and working with opanel, a
departmental spokesman said.
It can be followed by any person with a pass in English language at
GCE Ordinary Level Examination or with an equivalent qualification.
The duration of the programme is 6 months. Lectures are conducted in
both English and Sinhala mediums. Applications are issued from the
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science or can be downloaded from
www.ou.ac.lk/science/maths. Closing date of applications is October 06,

Api Wenuwen Api Housing in Ampara
The sixth phase of the Api Wenuwen Api house construction project for
War Heroes has started in the Ampara district with the funds allocated
by the Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as proposed by President
Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Bharathanatya Arangetram
The Bharathanatya Arangetram of Selvi G Shaktheeswarya, daughter of
Mr and Mrs Ganesan and disciple of Bharatha Miruthanga Kala Vithagar
Thivya Sivanesan of Abhinayashetra School of Dance will be held tomorrow
at the New Kathiresan Hall, Bambalapitiya, Colombo 4.
Felicitation ceremony
Popular lyricist and producer of children's programmes on radio,
Mahinda Algama, will be felicitated at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation on September 23 at 3 pm.
Algama received the most prestigious award in the music field -
Mahagamasekara Memorial Award, for his outstanding contribution to the
music industry for 2009-2010 at the State Music Festival recently.
Dr Praneeth Abeysundera will deliver the keynote address at this
felicitation ceremony. A collection of children's songs titled Tharu
Muthu Kumariya lyricised by Algama will also be launched on this
occasion.
Anniversary celebrations
Al Hikma Ahadiyyah School will celebrate its 25th anniversary today
at 4 pm at Tower Hall, Maradana, Colombo. Booker Recreation Pvt Ltd
managing director M Uvaiz will be the chief guest and Colombo District
Ahadiyyah Schools Federation president M R M Zarook will be the special
guest.
OBU Family Mass
The monthly family mass organized by the Josephian Group of '86 of St
Joseph's College Old Boys Union will be held on tomorrow at 8.30 a.m
followed by fellowship and breakfast.
A special significance of this month's mass will be that the
Josephian Group of '86 will be celebrating their 25 years jubilee in
leaving school.
All old Joes and their families are invited to participate in this
event.
Blood donation
A blood donation campaign organized by the Old Boys’ Union of St.
Aloysius College, Ratnapura to mark the 113th anniversary of the school,
will be held on September 19 at the college premises.
Talent show, competition
Lak Aharai - Sisu Dethai, a talent show and competition, organised by
the Horana Zonal Education Office to attract students towards the
subject of Home Economics and Science, will be held at the Sri
Medhankara Maha Vidyalaya, Horana on September 19 at 9.30 a.m. Education
Minister Bandula Gunawardene will be the chief guest.
An Information Department release said the programme was also
intended to educate children on making maximum use of local food items,
preparation of nutritional food items, adding economic value to local
food in order to face the world food crisis. |
