Railway development:
Track to be extended up to N'Eliya
Irangika RANGE
The Sri Lanka Railways will extend the upcountry railway line from
Nanu-oya to Nuwara-Eliya.
The length of the proposed railway track will be seven kilometres.
Transport Minister Kumara Welgama said this will address the long
felt needs of the people in the hill country.
This move will improve the tourism industry providing facilities for
tourists to visit the upcountry.
The minister made these remarks while visiting the Nanu-oya railway
station recently.
The minister with railway officials observed the proposed path of the
railroad.
The minister said that plans are afoot to renovate the Nanu-oya
railway station with modern facilities. Presently, the Podi Menike train
from the Colombo Fort ends its journey at the Nanu-oya station. Since
there are no direct trains between the Colombo Fort and Nuwara-eliya.
Visitors are facing difficulties to travel to Nuwara-eliya, the minister
said. |
