Year 5 Scholarship results:

Best performers from outstation

Most students who received the highest marks at the recent Year Five Scholarship examination are from outstation areas, Education Ministry statistics reveal.

According to results released by the Examinations Department, three students have become the island’s first, obtaining 195 marks each. These students are Oshadhi Rashiprabha Fonseka of Kalutara Balika Maha Vidyalaya,

Nethmi Ranaweera of Miriswatta Maha Vidyalaya, Dodamgoda and Naleem Zaky Ahamed of Kekirawa Muslim Maha Vidyalaya. Of these three two are from Kalutara while one is from Kekirawa.

Two students have obtained the second place with 194 marks each. They are Lakshitha Sathsara Sumanapala of Medagama Maha Vidyalaya and Parameswaran Shethuragavan of Neththaliyaru Tamil Vidyalaya. They are also from outstations respectively from Bibile and Visuvamadu West. Four students have attained third place obtaining 193 marks each. They are from Hakuruwela, Polgahawela, Mahiyangana and Vavuniya.

Nine out of the 10 students who attained fourth place obtaining 192 marks each, are also from outstations such as Negombo, Ratnapura, Balangoda, Nikaweratiya, Anuradhapura, Matale, Thanamalvila, Nintavur and Jaffna. Only one student is from Nugegoda.

In addition a majority of students who have passed the scholarship examination are from outstations. It is significant that, there is a rising number of high performing students from rural and difficult areas such as Vavuniya, Moneragala, Badulla, Trincomalee etc.

Based on the Grade five Scholarship Examination results, around 31,000 students are qualified to receive scholarships and enter popular schools. Accordingly, 16,000 students will be benefited to enter popular schools while 15,000 will receive financial help, the Examinations Commissioner General Anura Edirisinghe said.

Meanwhile, the district cut-off marks for entering popular schools have also been released by the Education Ministry. Students will be selected to receive scholarships and selected to enter popular schools based on the cut-off marks.

Students who have obtained the cut-off mark or above are qualified to apply to enter popular schools. Relevant applications will be issued by schools in due course.
