Electricity pirate fined

A man who pirated electricity was fined Rs 10,000 by Horana Magistrate Mahinda Ranasinha and also ordered him to pay Rs 135,497.50 to the Ceylon Electricity Board.

B Alosingho, a resident of Anguruwathota road, Horana, had pirated electricity for his business place.


Public Administration degree programme:

Application deadline extended

The closing date to obtain applications for the postgraduate degree programme in Public Administration of the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA) for the academic year 2011-2013 has been extended until October 15, 2011.

SLIDA said the previous application closing date which was on September 30 has been extended due to popular demand. Applicants can post or hand over the filled application to No 28/10, Malalasekera Mawatha, Colombo 7. Visit www.slida.lk or contact 011-2586758,011-2508840 for more information.


New bridge damaged

The new bridge in Panadura along the Colombo Galle Road is cracked and is a danger to passing vehicles.

The concrete wing walls of the bridge are broken and have fallen to the river.

The Road Development and Highways Ministries have not taken any action yet, motorists complain.

About 1,000 vehicles and container lorries proceed up and down over the Panadura bridge daily.


Held for running Kasippu den

A suspect running a "Kasippu den" at Morathiha was arrested by Kurunegala police on Sunday. Police also recovered eight goda barrels, 48 Kasippu bottles, three copper wires and a gunny bag of sugar with a knife. Police said the suspect had involved in nine kasippu cases last year. He was produced before Kurunegala Chief Magistrate Buddhika Ragala and remanded.


Tanks renovated

Sixty seven tanks of the Mahaweli Zone in Trincomalee have been renovated under the Yali Pubudamu programme.


Buddhist talk

Bikkuni Kusuma will deliver a public talk in English on 'Satipatthana Sutta - Majjhima Nikaya' at the Meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on September 17 at 4.30 pm at Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Thai society AGM

The Sri Lanka-Thailand Society will hold its 14th Annual General Meeting on September 24 commencing 5.30 pm at the Rainbow Room, Grand Oriental Hotel, York Street, Colombo 1 followed by a farewell dinner to Thailand Ambassador Thinakorn Kanasuta and Madam Dana Kanasuta. A Cultural Show will also be held.


Annual sale and fair

Ceylon Bible Society Annual sale and Good News Fair will be held at the Christian Reformed Church Galle Road, Wellawatta on September 24 from 9 am to 2 pm. Clothes, games, food, books and many more will be on sale.


Second anniversary

The second anniversary of "National Library Friends" will be held on September 15 at 9 am at the National Library Auditorium. "National Library Friends" organization was established with the participation of library professionals and others who show special interest on National Library activities.


Dog show

'Bouwwa show', a show of Sri Lankan bred dogs organized by the Blue Paw Trust will be held on September 25 at 10 am at the Sathutu Uyana, Viharamahadevi Park.


Exhibition

St. Benedict's College, Colombo will hold an exhibition at its premises from 15 to 17 to showcase the creative talents and potentialities of its students, College Director Bro. Granville Perera said. Organizations and government bodies such as Central Bank, Archaeological Department, Kelaniya University Medical Faculty, NARA, Sri Lanka Telecom, Army, Navy, Air Force and many other agencies has extended their patronage, the sources said.
