Lyceum International Nugegoda first runner-up – Fourth session of the
Sri Lanka Model United Nations
Lyceum recycling project in progress. |
Armed with a delegation of 35 talented young people, ready for three
days of intense debate, diplomacy and achievement, Lyceum International
School, Nugegoda scored first runner-up at the 2011 Sri Lanka Model
United Nations.
Representing the nations of the USA, Iceland, Panama, Marshall
Islands, Lesotho and Cambodia with a delegation ranging from the ages of
12 to 18, Sri Lanka Model United Nations could not have asked for any
better.
The following are the award winners for Lyceum Nugegoda:

(USA) in Futuristic Security Council.
* Shamil Mohsin: Higher Commendation for (USA) in the Committee for
Disarmament and International Security.

Finance Committee.
* Sachintha Gunaratne: Honorary Mention (USA) in the Social, Cultural

As a society which believes not just in debating for change, but in
creating it, the Model United Nations Club of Lyceum Nugegoda was
heavily involved in innovative projects for the community to bring about
awareness and social change. One such initiative was to carry out a
recycling project (June 2011) in partnership with the Municipal Council
of Kotte, targetting the shops as well as the residents in around the
Nugegoda supermarket area. Headed by the dynamic duo Ryan Poulier and
Dineth Wijesiriwardana both whom which coordinated the first of its kind
for Lyceum, as well as being a first for any Model United Nations (MUN)
club.
Another project carried out was assisting of the building libraries
for three rural schools in Wennappuwa; Situkumari Maha Vidyalaya,
Haldadhuwana College and Anuradha Central College, which was coordinated
by Kavindya Tennakoon. In the year 2010, Lyceum’s project of raising
awareness regarding racial discrimination won the award at COMUN for the
Best Project.
Lyceum has been consistent in her victories in MUN since the year
2007, with the winning of Best Delegation (USA) and securing second
place for Best School for the first time in COMUN ‘08. 2011 brought
about the most rewarding year for these young students with bringing
home the award for Best School and Best Delegation (UK) in COMUN, one
which the delegation had long prepared for. MUN has served as a platform
for leadership and skill development and has created a great impact on
the schools youth.
The club has given its fair share of Head Prefects, Deputy Heads,
House Captains and members of the prefect’s guild and continues to mould
upcoming students into leaders.
Training for the delegates has swiftly evolved and continues to do so
becoming diverse and different with time, there being something new to
learn at each session.
With the launch of LISMUN in the year 2009 (brainchild of Stefan Jaro)
as a conference dedicated for the training of Lyceum Nugegoda delegates,
it has evolved to be a conference for the Lyceum Wattala students as
well, and in the future, hopes to join with the other branch schools.
Teacher-in-charge Ranmali Silva, Lyceum Model United Nations Club is
indeed sure that good times and good things are awaiting just within
reach. The team would especially like to thank the Greros as well as the
former teacher-in-charge Kanndegama for the immense support given to
bring LIS MUN to the glory it has achieved today. |
