Strict instructions for MPs to uphold law and order

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has given all his MPs strict instructions to ensure law and order is upheld in their respective districts, said Construction Engineering Service, Housing and Common Amenities Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, speaking at a discussion held at Mahara Kadawata Mosque on August 23.

Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie said that when it was brought to his notice that certain unknown persons had caused some damage to the Mahara Mosque, the President instructed Minister Basil Rajapaksa to inquire into the incident.

There on the latter sent Deputy Minister Alagiyawanna to the spot immediately to conduct an inquiry. It is this type of swift action that could dispel rumour mongers' anti-social and anti-government activities, he said.

Western Province Governor S. Alavi Mawlana said peace and harmony has prevailed amongst the people in the Mahara area and the President and Minister Basil Rajapaksa would never allow anyone to disturb this tranquility in any city.

A.H.M. Azwer MP, said the Malays, who were holding responsible posts at prisons in the past had built this Mosque outside the Mahara Prisons over a hundred years ago. Every great leaders like Dr. T.B. Jayah, Justice M.T. Akbar, Q.C., and Dr. M.C.M. Kaleel had visited the Mosque during festival days to participate at religious functions organized by the All Ceylon Muslim League.

He was aware of the cordial relationship that existed among the Malays and Sinhalese.

Colonel (retd) Booso said that the Mosque authorities have already repaired few bulbs broken inside the Mosque and the water taps outside the Mosque. It was a minor damage and they were prepared to forget the incident and continue the religious activities in the Mosque.

They wanted an Imam to be placed in the Mosque day and night and no blockades be placed to carry funerals to the adjoining burial grounds.

M.A.A.R. Masinghe, ASP Kelaniya, S.P. W.M.R.Z. Wickramasinghe, SP Mahara Prions, Nissar Noordeen, President of the Mosque, Saman Pradeep Vithana, Chairman, Pradeshiya Sabha, Mahara, Welfare Society's Secretary Tuan T. Mahanoor, Tuan T.R.S. Laxaman attended this meeting.

Chief Imam Moulavi T.B. Imamdeen recited a Special Ramazan Du'a.

'President would never allow anyone to disturb the tranquility in any city'.
