Power projects with reduced carbon emission
About 35 Mw to national grid:

Sri Lanka will implement more Broadlands Hydropower Projects which
will drastically reduce carbon emissions while adding more power to the
national grid.
Ceylon Electricity Board's (CEB) chairman Prof. W. Abeywickrama said
the 35 Mw Broadlands Hydro Power Projects will be constructed along the
Kelani river covering the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.
He said that measures will be taken to register these projects for
Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) aimed at reducing carbon
emissions.
The CDM under the UN Kyoto protocol will give the Certified Emission
Reduction (CER) Certificate which sindicates to the Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
that is reduced by the project.
A contract on consultancy services to register the CDM was signed by
the CEB with the Korean Company, Ecoeye at the CEB headquarters in
Colombo Thursday.
The Broadlands Hydropower projects can prevent carbon emission by
86,000 metric tons per year. |
