President seeks explanation
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has sought an explanation from the
authorities as to why the road leading to Sirikotha, UNP Headquarters in
Kotte was carpeted in a hurry on Wednesday, Director General of the
President’s Media Division Bandula Jayasekara said.
Summons on UNP MP’s son

Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Lanka Jayaratne
yesterday issued summons on Dinuk Bandara Kiriella, son of UNP MP
Lakshman Kiriella for not being present in court when the case was
called yesterday.
Earlier, the suspect had been arrested on charges of being heavily
under the influence of liquor and attacking and wounding a police
officer and obstructing his official duty.
Twelfth year commemoration
The 12th year commemoration of war hero captain Premil Perera of the
Commando Regiment, who sacrificed his life to save the country from LTTE
terrorism will be commemorated on August 22 at 6 pm. A holy mass will be
offered at St Mary’s Church, Nayakakanda on August 20. Free distribution
of spectacles and dry rations for low income families will be held on
August 21 and 22 respectively in association with the Premil Perera
Commemorative Committee and well-wishers of the area.

The fifth Annual General meeting of the Institute of Environmental
Professionals will be held at Waters Edge Battaramulla today at 9.00 am.
Attorney General Mohan Peiris will be the chief guest.
‘Search light’ military tatoo today

The three day ‘search light’ military tatto organized by the Sri
Lanka Army will be opened at the Anuradhapura Public Playground today
(August 19). The tatto organised on a concept of Army Commander Lt Gen.
Jagath Jayasuriya will enable the public in Anuradhapura to view the
strategy, might and the bravery displayed by our war heroes to defeat
cruel LTTE terrorism during the humanitarian operation.
Library, dispensary to be shifted

Malimbada Pradeshiya Sabha at its monthly meeting adopted a motion to
shift the public library to Malimbada town and locate the ayurveda
dispensary in the vacated building of the library for the convenience of
the public.
PS Chairman Somasiri Weeraman who tabled the motion said that the
ayurveda dispensary building in Malimbada is in a dilapidated condition
and not suited to maintain a medical centre. Another motion was also
passed at the meeting to set up fish stalls at Malimbada town to
facilitate consumers.
Vehicle with forged chassis number seized

Panadura Police Special Crime and Fraud Bureau officials seized a
luxury motor vehicle with forged chassis number. The vehicle had been
hidden in a house at Wewala, Piliyandela.
Police raided the house on information provided by the suspects
previously arrested for possessing three luxury motor vehicles by
erasing the original chassis numbers.
The suspect produced before Panadura Magistrate R S A Dissanayake was
released on bail. The magistrate also ordered police to get a report
from the government analyst and the Motor Commissioner’s Department.
Floating body found
Galgamuwa police found a body of a female around 25 to 30 years
floating in the Siyambalankatuwa wewa on Wednesday around 8 am.
The body is that of a person, fair in complexion, lean, five ft three
inches in height, elongated face, potruding teeth, dressed in a frock.
The body is lying at the Kurunegala Hospital morgue pending a
post-mortem examination. Police investigations are continuing.
Houses for needy youth club members

Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry has taken steps to
build 332 houses for the needy.
Active, dedicated and deserving members of youth clubs of the
National Youth Services Council (NYSC) will be selected at Divisional
Secretariat level.
One family from each Divisional Secretariats division islandwide will
be selected and donated with a house. A selected low-income family will
receive a house valued at Rs. 470,000. This programme is implemented by
the National Youth Services Council.
Man netted with heroin

The Police Special Task Force (STF) arrested a person at Ambalanthota
with 40 mg of heroin on Tuesday night. Ambalanthota STF camp personnel
arrested the suspect on Ridiyagama road, Waragodella around 10.30 pm.
The suspect, a resident of Senanayake Mawatha, Ambalanthota was
arrested and handed over to the Ambalanthota Police for further
investigations.
The suspect was arrested on information received by the STF
intelligence.
Road temporarily closed
Around 300 metres of one track of Templars Road from Kurunduwatta
junction along Galle Road will be temporarily closed from August 18 to
September 5.
One track will be closed due to the pipe laying activities of the
Water Supply and Drainage Board. The police request drivers to seek
alternative routes from Attidiya junction to Bakery junction and from
Bakery junction to Galle Road.
Traffic restrictions along Pitakotte Road
Vehicular traffic along Pitakotte road from Bangala Junction to the
turn off to Beddagana junction will be restricted until further notice
to facilitate urgent rehabilitation work. Residents will be permitted to
use a single lane for their vehicles during this period.
Discussion
The next Buddhist public panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will be
held on August 21 at 10 am at its Borella building on "Improving the
practice of Meditation." The panelists are Prof Raja de Alwis and Asoka
Mahinda Jayasinghe, former Trade Commissioner, Bombay with Rajah Kuruppu
as moderator. All are welcome.
Diploma ceremony
The Diploma Awards Ceremony of the Lyceum - MLGF Vocational Training
Institute will be held on August 21 at 8.30 am at the Lyceum
International School, Nugegoda.
This courses was conducted free of charge under the Community
Educational and Vocational Training Programme, established by the Mohan
Lal Grero Foundation in collaboration with the Lyceum International
School.
Induction ceremony
The induction of newly elected Chartered Engineers of the Institution
of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) and the awarding of certificates to those
who have successfully completed the degree equivalent engineering course
conducted by the IESL along with the awarding of scholarships to winners
of its 'Junior Inventor of the Year - 2010' competition will take place
at the Waters Edge today from 4 pm.

Entrance test
The postponed Sri Lanka Open University M.Ed entrance test will be
held tomorrow at the Open University provincial centres in Colombo,
Matara, Jaffna, Batticaloa and Anuradhapura, an Open University official
said.
The exams will be held from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm. Postdated admission
cards will be valid.
The earlier announcement that the exam will be held at Nawala
President's Girls School was an error, an official added.
Medical camp
The Law Students' Society is organizing a free medical camp today
from 8 am to 2.30 pm at the College to mark the Sri Lanka Law College
100th anniversary.
There will be specialist consultancy, dental clinic, eye clinic and
medical laboratory services.
