Education, infrastructure development must go hand in hand - Wimal

With the ongoing project to upgrade thousand schools, the education system also needs to be upgraded, said Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

Minister
Wimal Weerawansa

He was addressing the Rawathawatta Methodist School Arts Day.

If the education system is not upgraded alongside infrastructure development the expected outcome will not take place.

The current education system focuses on the students' memory capacity instead of knowledge. Therefore, most students get through exams by memorizing. This is useless as it won't help society or the country's development, he said.

The government is investing a large sum of money on education but the expected results are not seen because of this situation. Such students become a burden to society after leaving school.

"It is time to change this situation and change the education system. Parents too have great responsibility in guiding their children," he added.
