Peace and devotion
Large crowds of devotees were seen this year too for the
annual feast of Our Lady of Madhu. Pilgrims from all corners
of the country continued to stream in their varied modes of
transport to the sylvan shrine reminiscent of the leisurely,
tranquil days of the past, with no barriers or impediments
to hold them back. Here a section of the faithful seen in
prayer and devotion as the legendary Statue of Our Lady of
Madhu is taken round the church in a decorated chariot

Bran of wheat flour to be increased

The Health Ministry is discussing with relevant sections to increase
the bran of wheat flour to 80 percent. Currently, the bran is only 24
percent, a Health Ministry spokesman said.
Wheat flour is imported to Sri Lanka and processed in local
factories. The current extract rate is 74 percent and the whole bran of
wheat flour is removed and sold.
The bran contains all vitamins and fibre and it is the most
nutritious part of wheat flour. Wheat flour with less bran causes
various diseases especially diabetes and other Non Communicable
Diseases. Food made out of wheat flour is not recommended by doctors for
such patients.
Fish breeding increased in Inginiyagala

Breeding hunga, lula, magura, mahavalaya and valapoththa and
releasing them into fresh water reservoirs are the activities undertaken
by zoologists at the Fish Breeding Centre in Inginiyagala of the Gal-oya
valley, Ampara.
They say that the fish in inland reservoirs have become extinct and
action is taken to increase fish production. A zoologist in Inginiyagala
claimed that they were able to produce a large number of hunga and
mahavalaya fingerlings at their hatcheries last March.
Accident kills one

A 20-year-old employed at a garment factory in Horana was run over by
a container on the Horana Road and succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
Horana Police arrested the driver.

Major General Chandana Rajaguru has been appointed to the post of
Commissioner General of Rehabilitation by President Mahinda Rajapaksa
with effect from August 15. He will be serving in this position while
holding his position as the Director General, Infantry at the Army
Headquarters.
Crafts village attracts more tourists
The crafts village set up at the Battaramulla Jana Kala Kendra
complex has been a big attraction among foreign and local tourists
including schoolchildren in the context of the peaceful environment in
the country.
The crafts village is open from 10 am to 6 pm daily on all weekdays
for the benefit of people visiting it. Most of the creations have been
appreciated and praised by the visitors, said a press release by the
National Crafts Council.
Fuel bill a must
Issuing of bills to customers from fuel stations has been made
compulsory by the government. Petroleum Industries Minister Susil
Premajayantha has directed Ceylon Petroleum Corporation chairman Harry
Jayawardena to ensure that every customer receives a receipt.
Clergy gathering
A clergy gathering organized by the Ceylon Bible Society will be held
on August 19 at 8.30 am at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour,
Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.
Dharmapala scouts at World Scouts Jamboree
Two Senior Scouts from Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya, Pubudu
Chinthaka Jinadasa and Lahiru Abeysinghe represented the National Scouts
Team which took part in the World Scouts Jamboree which was held in
Rinkaby in Sweden recently.
CEB employee dies of electrocution

An employee of the Jaffna Electricity Board was electrocuted while
engaged in repair work near the Gurunagar Anna reading room. His charred
body was found hanging on the electric post. He was identified as
Navaratnam Puniyamoorthy, 54.
Seatbelts must from October 1

The law which makes the wearing of seatbelts mandatory for drivers
and front seat passengers of motor vehicles is to be implemented by the
government from October 1. The Transport Ministry gazette notification
on the Motor Traffic (Seatbelts) regulations states that the regulations
will also be applied to lorries and coaches that are registered after
October 1.
eople who are less than 1.5 metres in height and those with permanent
disabilities are exempted from wearing seatbelts. However, they are
required to obtain a medical certificate to prove that they are unable
to wear a seatbelt. No person will be allowed to sell or offer for sale
or have in his or her possession for sale, any vehicle which is not
fitted with a body restraining seatbelt once the law comes into effect.
Get-together
A sports meet and get-together organized by the Past Pupils
Association of Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya will be held at the
school grounds on August 28.

Musical show
A musical show featuring vocalists Lalith Kumara Mudannayake and
Upali Ratnayake will be held at the Tower Hall, Maradana on August 20 at
10 am. The G 7th band will provide the music. Visharada Rohana
Weerasinghe will be the chief guest.
Two music CDs titled Kandulu Kendrayak and Hedakara Hendewa produced
by Mudannayake and Ratnayake respectively will also be released on this
day.
