Since this is the school vacation,
students from all parts of the country are currently
visiting the Parliamentary complex to have a glimpse of the
complex and follow Parliamentary proceedings. A batch of
students who visited Parliament yesterday received sets of
books from Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa at a ceremony organized
by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sumedha G Jayasena. Here

‘50 Years of Science at Peradeniya’
The University of Peradeniya Science Alumni
Association (UPSAA) is celebrating “50 Years of Science at
Peradeniya” with a Faculty Day on Sunday August 28, 2011. The
programme which begins at 9.30 a.m will include reminiscences by
Alumni including Jayampathy Samarakoon of the 1961 batch and MHV
“Bola” Cooray and provide Alumni and their family and friends an
opportunity to renew acquaintance with colleagues and the Faculty
and to visit the departments.
The faculty Day will end with fellowship and lunch

Foreigner’s body found at Kollupitiya
Yasaratne GAMAGE
Kollupitiya Police found the body of a foreigner
about 100 metres away from the Kollupitiya Railway Station. Police
Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said that Ibraginmov Mohideen, 20,
from Uzbekistan had arrived in Sri Lanka on July 12.
The body is lying at the Colombo General Hospital
morgue for a postmortem.
Kandy roads to be repaired

Several roads in the Kandy district are to be
carpeted under the Japan Co-operative Fund, said Central Provincial
Minister of Highways Bandula S.B. Yalegama.
The roads to be carpeted are Herassagala – Bowala,
Hanthana, Udawala, Rajaphilla – Sirimalwatta, Menikhinna, Danture,
Amugala, Henwala and Gannoruwa, Murutalawa.
The minister said some of the work has already
commenced and all scheduled project will be completed this year. In
addition to the road renovations programme Rs. 500,000 has been
assigned to provide electricity.
Devinuwara Randoli Perahera

The final Randoli Perahera of the Devinuwara Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya
will parade the streets of Devinuwara from 5.08 pm today.
The Perahera season began with the first Peli Perahera on August 7
led by Basnayaka Nilame Dishan Wickramaratne.
Police curfew in Pottuvil, Thirukkovil

A Police curfew has been imposed in Thirukkovil and Pottuvil police
divisions until 6 am today due to public unrest following the killing of
a youth in the area, Police Spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said.
Workshop for new ministry recruits
The establishing of the workforce at the National Languages and
Social Integration Ministry and institutions coming under it was held at
the ministry under the patronage of Senior Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara.
The first workshop was held on August 8 with the participation of
Ministers Vasudeva Nanayakkara, DEW Gunasekera and Tissa Vitharana.
Pinnacle unveiling ceremony
The unveiling ceremony of the pinnacle under construction at the Siri
Gauthama Dhammarajika Maha Stupa at Mahamewna Bodhignana Bhavana Asapuwa
in Kaduwela will be held today with the participation of Prime Minister
D M Jayaratne.
A series of Pinkamas were held from August 10 with an exhibition of
Buddha Relics which were to be enshrined at the Dagoba. Thousands of
devotees worshipped the Relics during the last two days. Organizers
expect the participation of a large number of devotees in today's
Pinkama.
Opening of RPL centres
The National Apprenticeship and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA)
will open two Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) Centres today in
Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi to provide streamlined and simplified skills
recognition for skilled persons engaged in the construction and the
mechanical fields.
The World University Service of Canada on the initiative of the
Norwegian Foreign Ministry has invested Rs. 19 million to set up these
two centres.
Children's day festival in Hambantota
The main Children's Day festival in the Hambantota District to mark
2011 World Children's Day will be held on October 1 at the Hambantota
Siribopura Singapore-Sri Lanka Friendship Primary School Centre. It will
be held under the patronage of Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.
Over 250 children from 10 primary schools in the area will
participate, including parents and invitees. The Children's Day festival
will be held from 8.30 am to 2.30 pm where various events will be held
to showcase the talents of children.
Kathak performance
Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo is organizing a Kathak dance
performance titled Melody and Rhythm by renowned Kathak exponents
Nalini-Kamalini and their Guru Jitendra Maharaj on the occasion of 65th
Independence Day of India.
The performance will take place on August 15 at 6.30 pm at the
Bishop's College Auditorium, Perahera Mawatha, Colombo 3.
The Kathak maestros will perform in various parts of Sri Lanka
including Jaffna, Kandy and Hambantota in their 10-day long progrmame.
Their performances will be accompanied on tabla by Akbar Latif Khan, on
Violin by Afzaal Zahoor. Nalini Nigam will be the vocalist.
Memorial programme
Former Finance Minister and Lanka Sama Samaja Party Leader Dr. N.M.
Perera's 32nd commemoration programme will be held on August 14 at 12.30
p.m at the Yatiyantota National School Auditorium as Yatiyantota was his
electorate. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne will be the chief guest.
