J.A.S. Maduranga (Sri Lanka Army) became the cynosure of the final
day when he sphered a distance of 77.29 metres in his first attempt to
set up a new Sri Lanka record at the 89th National Athletic
Championships which concluded at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Sports
Complex in Diyagama yesterday.
Airwoman W.K.L.A. Nimali set a new meet record book for the second
time in the championships by finishing women’s 1500 metres in 04 minutes
26.25 seconds where she erased R.P.U. Kanchanamala’s 10 years old
record.
It was K.A.K.L.Perera of Air Force who equalized the previous Sri
Lanka Record of R.A.A. Kumarawansa by clearing 3.20 metres in the womens
pole vault event.
Waruna Dayaratne, the previous Sri Lankan Record holder in the men’s
javelin throw, seemed less competitive and became third in the event.
In the mens 100 metres final B.R.A.Hasaranga of Sri Lanka Army won
the gold medal by reaching the finish line in 10.75 seconds.
Athletes from Malayasina Amateur Athletic Union dominated the womens
100 metres by grabbing the gold and the silver with ease where Siti
Fatima clocked 12.06 seconds to win the event. The mens decathlon winner
was W.K.D.S. Perera of Sri Lanka Air Force when he scored a total of
5805 points. B.A.S.Ayeesha of Police Sports Club won the gold in the
women’s heptathlon by collecting 3672 points.
