Ganja, tobacco meant for Lanka seized in India
Indian Police foiled a bid to smuggle narcotic substances to Sri
Lanka yesterday by arresting six people, including one Sri Lankan and
seizing 40 kgs of ganja and five bundles of tobacco at Thangatchimadam,
a village in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Police said during a routine
vehicle check at a check post near St Theresal Church at Thangatchimadam
coastal hamlet, the police intercepted a van coming from Tiruchirapalli.
During verification, police found 20 bundles of ganja weighing 40 kgs
and five bundles of tobacco kept in the van, Indian media reported.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the gang attempted to smuggle
the narcotic substances to Sri Lanka through a clandestine boat. Police
also seized 100,000 Indian rupees from the gang while the van was
