Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala displayed an outstanding performance
and walked away with the A Divission overall championship for the
fourth consecutive year when the 20th Milo Trophy All Island Schools
Netball Championships concluded on a grand note at the Uyanwatta
Stadium, Matara yesterday.
Familians were outstanding throughout the tournament, winning
under-18, under-16 and under-12 championship titles, collecting 65
point. Kaluthara Balika Vidyalaya became the overall runner up by
obtaining 29 points.
They finished up with the runner up position in the under-14 age
group after they suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Maliyadeva
Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala (15/12) in the final.
They aslo comfortably beat Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo (39/25) in the
under-18 final after posting a comfortable lead at the half time stage
(22/10) and never allowed Vishakians to reduce the gap. Familians
prospected on some good passes which they converted into points with an
excellent team work to clinch the victory.
Kaluthara Balika Vidyalaya played aggressively during the first half
of the under-16 final match against Kurunegala Familians were one point
ahead at the half time (10/9). Familians played hard in the second half
and made inroads with back to back points and gained the control and.
They defeated their opponents with an eight point lead in the end.
Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala made the biggest upset in the
tournament when they beat strong Familians by three points (15/12) in
the under-14 final match. Davians maintained the lead from the beginning
and never lose their grip.
Familians showed some resistance in the early stage but were finished
behind two points in the first half (8/6).
Making a new record in the 20 years history of the Milo
Championships, two teams from the same school battled for honours in the
under-12 final match when the Holy Family Convent A team triumphed
over their B team (11/5).
A much competitive game was played in the under -18 consolation final
match where Kaluthara Balika Vidyalaya won after an exiting battle
against Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala (29/27). The match was
extended for an extra six minutes as both teams have scored equal points
in the end (24/24). The half time scores were also tallied 13 all.
Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa was the chief guest at the closing
ceremony and gave away the trophies. |
