The Mass Lanka Prime Minister Awards 2011 organized by the
United Mass Communication Association to promote
journalistic excellence and felicitate outstanding
personalities who contributed to the country’s development
in keeping with traditional values and high ethical
standards was held with the participation of Prime Minister
DM Jayaratne at the Galle Face Hotel recently. This is an
annual event which showcases and recognizes the achievements
of journalists and outstanding personalities. Veteran
journalist and Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd Chairman
Bandula Padmakumara and three other Lake House journalists,
namely Ayanthi Vithana, Premakumara Rajapaksa and Wehelle

Bowser runs into tree, one killed, one injured

A bowser transporting cement dust from Galle to the Maththala
International Airport worksite, crashed onto a wayside banyon tree at
the Talalla South bend and toppled into the paddy field below on Sunday
night. One person was killed in the accident while another person was
injured and hospitalised. The deceased was identified as Abeyratne (30),
a resident of Rajangana who has been the bowser assistant. His body is
lying at the Matara Hospital.
The alleged driver, a resident of Thalahitiya Naranwala in Kurunegala,
is in police custody.
Gandara police is investigating.
Anunayaka Thera passes away

The Anunayaka Thera of Syamopali Maha Nikaya (Sri Rohana Sector) and
Chief Incumbent Pantharama Purana Vihara Katupothawila, Athuraliya,
Rajakeeya Panditha Ven Kekunewela Piyarathana Thera passed away at
Matara General Hospital on Monday. The cremation will take place at
Viharaya premises on Thursday (04) evening.
Ramazan programme
A Ramazan programme has been organized by the Chief Trustee of the
Nawala Jummah Masjid, Rajagiriya for Al-Haj M.H.A. Haniffa.
Tharaveeya prayers will be conducted daily during the month of
Ramazan commencing at 8.15 pm by Hafis Nazeem and by Hafis M.M. Fashan.
On Saturdays and Sundays after Vithr prayers will be conducted.
Thaubah and Zikr Majlis will be conducted on August 4, 11 and 18 for
the Jamath in the month of Ramazan on Thursday nights. On the 17th day
of Ramazan Badr Mowlood will be recited after vithr prayers. Thasbeeh
prayers will be conducted on the 27th day in the month of Ramazan
followed by a special Duah, after Vithr Prayers.
New members to be sworn-in
All Urban Council and Pradeshiya Sabha members who have been elected
from the Ratnapura and Kegalle distrits numbering 105 will be sworn-in
at a function to be held at the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council
auditorium before Governor W J M Lokubandara and Chief Minister Mahipala
Herath on August 2.
Kegalle and Balangoda Urban Councils, Balangoda, Weligepola,
Ratnapura, Ruwanwella and Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha were won at the
recent local government elections by the United People's Freedom
Alliance.
The function will also be attended by Ratnapura and Kegalle district
Parliamentarians among others.
Jumble sale
The Ceylon Association for the Mentally Retarded will hold a Jumble
Sale on August 6 from 9 am to 3 pm at Sumaga Training Centre, 435/1,
Galle Road, Mt. Lavinia - Details on Tel:5514616.
The proceeds of the sale will be utilized for the training programmes
being conducted for the Mentally Retarded of Sumaga.
Death of Nimal Munasinghe

Nimal Munasinghe, 58, an Audit Officer in the Bank of Ceylon expired
on July 31 after a short illness.
Munasinghe was a father of three and a social worker. He was a Dayaka
of Godagama, Homagama Purana Raja Maha Viharaya. Munasinghe had been in
the service of the Bank of Ceylon for 37 years and working as an
Assistant Manager in Maharagama, Homagama, Dehiwala, Padukka, Nugegoda,
Battaramulla and Economic Trade Centre Meegoda.
Remains are laying at 129/1, Keremulla Road, Godagama, Homagama.
Funeral rites will be held at the Habarakada crematorium tomorrow at
5.00 p.m. |
