Govt plans to provide each dhamma school with Rs 150,000

To mark the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi anniversary, the government
has drawn up plans to provide Rs 150,000 to each selected Dhamma school
throughout the country on Dhamma Schools Day, which has been fixed for
August 3. The donations would be provided to 2,600 Dhamma schools,
Buddhist Affairs Commissioner General Chandraprema Gamage said
addressing a press conference at the Information Department yesterday.
The 116th Dhamma School commemoration ceremony would be held under
the patronage of the Mahanayakes of the Malwatu and Asgiri Chapters,
with the participation of Prime Minister D M Jayaratna at the National
Heritage Center Gampola.
To mark the All Ceylon Dhamma schools day, Buddhist Affairs
Department has drawn up a plan to provide Rs 2,000 and uniforms to each
Dhamma school teacher in the country.
Along with it, the Department has also drawn up a plan to provide
scholarships to Ampara District Dhamma school children of grade 10, who
had received higher marks for their Dhamma school grade examination.
They would be provided with these funds, until they enter university
education. 153 children have qualified for these scholarships, he said.
Along with the All Ceylon Dhamma school day, the Department has also
drawn up a plan to establish a Dhamma school flag week. The price of a
flag was Rs 5. Funds from this would be utilized to help Dhamma school
teachers who were in need of medical facilities for illness such as
heart problems.
Earlier, All Ceylon Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandala President
Welamitiyawe Kusala Dhamma thera, said to mark the 2600th Sambuddhathva
Jayanthi and several segments had railed in response to their call.
Attitude, knowledge and skill were the fundamental targets of
education. Among them, attitudes were being spread by Dhamma schools,
the thera said. |
