Sri Lanka to take part in Lawyers Cricket World Cup

The Lawyers Cricket World Cup Tournament for the third consecutive year is to be held from August 7 to 22, 2011 at Barbados Island, West Indies. This world cup tournament was held in Hyderabad in India for the first time; where India and Pakistan won the championship and the first runners up title respectively. Sri Lanka was commended as second runner-up at this first tournament.

The second World Cup tournament was held in Cambridge, London; where Sri Lanka couldn’t play in two matches in the series due to the rain which led to an unfortunate situation of being knocked out from the tournament.

There are 8 test cricket countries participating in this 2011 Lawyers Cricket world cup, where the lawyers will be representing their countries respectively.

The tournament that was initiated three years back intending to develop friendship, fellowship and integrity among the lawyers around the world; has taken a very competitive face where all talented, skillful cricketers are representing the countries today.

Sri Lanka team is fully fledged with well trained, experienced cricketers who are ready for the rivalry and look forward for Sri Lanka’s victory.

This time the arrangements are made by the organizing committee to conduct day and night matches for both the two semi final and the final matches.

The first round matches of the tournament are conducted in two groups, where Sri Lanka will be in rivalry with West Indies, Australia and Pakistan. It is believed that Australia who won the 2nd Lawyers Cricket World cup is the most challenging team for Sri Lanka.

In addition to this, the Sri Lanka team is representing the National Lawyers Sports Society, Division III batch these days; while placing the 1st place in the 1st round of matches and actively participating in the 2nd round of matches now.

A special feature of the team is that they were the champions for 3 consecutive years at the National Law Medical Cricket Tournament.

The team will be led by the Captain Malith Gunasekara, a former Thurstan College cricketer and Vice Captain Asela Patabadi, a former Maliyadeva College cricketer; guided and coached by Upali Senarathna.

Theja Silva, a former Ananda Collage cricketer and who holds the prestige to be the Vice Captain at the first Lawyers Cricket World Cup Tournament will motive and be strength to the team as Manager.
