Certificate presentation
The presentation of certificates to winners of the certificate course
for Management Assistant Legal-2011 organized by the Legal Aid
Commission of Sri Lanka in collaboration with Sri Lanka Law College and
Equal Access to Justice Project of UNDP will be held today at 9 am at
the BMICH.
Thala Mala Pipila at Mahanama
The Colombo Chapter of the Alumni Association of the University of
Peradeniya will stage Jayalath Manoratne’s award winning play Thala Mala
Pipila on August 6 at 6.30 pm at Mahanama College Hall, Colombo 03.
The cast includes Manoratne, Lal Kularatne, Ratna Lalani, Sampath
Tennakoone, Sarath Chandrasiri, Vasantha Vittachchi, Ajith Lokuge and
Jagath Benaragama.
Selection exam for IJSO
The examination to select six students for the International Junior
Science Olympiad (IJSO) will be held at the Department of Physics,
University of Colombo on August 13. Students who are in up to Grade 10
classes could apply for the selection examination if they are 15 years
or younger on December 31, 2011. Applicants must register on or before
August 5, 2011.

The IJSCO 2011 will be held in Durban, South Africa from December 1

Blood donation to commemorate Anagarika Dharmapala
A blood donation will be held at Rainbow preschool in Bandaragama on
July 31 from 9.00 a.m to 3.00 pm to commemorate Anagarika Dharmapla.
The blood donation campaign will be held to bestow merits on Marshal
art expert P.L. Somadasa.
This blood donation is organized by Sujith Sugantha Perera and
coordinated by Namali Ashoka Vithanage.
Pirates release oil tanker, crew including Lankan
Somali pirates released an oil tanker which was hijacked a week ago
that had a Sri Lankan among the crew after a US $ 200,000 ransom was
paid, a regional maritime official said.
Andrew Mwangura, Maritime Editor for Somalia Report said the United
Arab Emirates (UAE) vessel, Jubba XX, which had 16 multi- national crew
is headed to the port of Bosasso in Somalia.
Kandy Esala Perahera begins tomorrow

The world renowned Kandy Esala perahera will commence tomorrow at the
auspicious time of 7.07 am and the final night perahera will be on
August 13 followed by the water-cutting ceremony at the Mahaweli river
in Getambe on August 14.
The Kandy perahera festival will begin following the ‘Kap situwima’
of the four devalas tomorrow.
Hansard chief compiler retires
Chief Compiler of the Hansard of Parliament, Sirigala Rajapaksa will
be retiring from service today.
He joined the public sector in 1971 and served in few institutions
including the Plantation Ministry, Food Commissioner's Department,
Valuation Department and Public Administration and Home Affairs
Ministry.
He joined the service of Parliament in 1983 and started his carrier
as a Hansard Reporter in 1985. Sirigala Rajapaksa was appointed
Assistant Hansard Compiler in 1998. Later he became Deputy Hansard
Compiler in 2005. In 2007, he was appointed Chief Hansard Compiler of
Parliament. He was the 21st Chief Hansard Compiler in the history of Sri
Lanka's parliament.

The 22nd World Scout Jamboree at Rinkaby in southern Sweden was
officially inaugurated Thursday with over 38,000 participants from all
over the world. A 122 member Sri Lankan contingent have camped up with
their head Janaprith Fernando along with scouts from other nations. |
