New food packaging system introduced

Arrangements have been made by the Co-operative and Internal Trade Ministry to introduce a new vegetable and fruit packing system using plastic containers.

Under the existing packing system, about 30 percent of food items are being destroyed. Therefore, farmers and consumers have to face great difficulty and it directly influences the national economy.

Accordingly, a bulk of plastic containers has been sent to the Dambulla Economic Centre to be distributed among farmers for low rates.

Sri Palee Past Pupils family get-together

A family get-together organized by Sri Palee Past Pupils Association will be held at the college premises tomorrow from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at the college premises.

Highlights include the Upasana procession and other traditions observed by students of Sri Palee. It will also include sports events for children of past students. Music will be provided by Seeduwe Sakura.


Discussion on classical song

A discussion on classical song and its nature will be held at the Sri Lanka Press Council, near Lanka Sumithrayo, today at 4 pm. Professor Sunanda Mahendra, Press Council Assistant Commissioner Niroshan Tambavita, Daya Dissanayake, Dr Praneeth Abhayasundara, Buddhadasa Galappatty and Wasantha Rohana will participate in the discussion, Bandula Nanayakka-rawasam, Ajantha Ranasinghe, Neela Wickramasinghe and Mithra Kapuge will also participate.

The event is organised by Communication Forum President Keerthi Samaratunga.


Ahasin Polovata screening

Ahasin Polovata produced by U W Sumathipala directed by Dr Lester James Peries will be screened on August 2 at 4 p.m. at the Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi Mandira Auditorium in Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi Mawatha, Colombo 5. The screening will coincide with felicitating the artistes who worked on the 35-year old film.

Ahasin Polovata: Kalakami Arthapathiya - U W Sumathipala authored by Ranjith Kumara and the DVD will also be launched. The event is organised by U W Sumathipala Memorial Foundation.


Zahira Ramazan fair

The opening ceremony of the pre-Ramazan Fair organized by the Group of ‘80 of Zahira College, Colombo will be held tomorrow at 5.00 p.m. at the college premises.

Colombo District Sri Lanka Freedom Party Organiser Fawzan Anver will be the chief guest.

Minan Masjid, Dematagoda, Colombo has organized a special Ramazan lecture today after Isha prayers at the Minan Masjid. The guest speaker of this programme, All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama Colombo District Secretary Ash Sheik M.H.M. Yoosuf Mufthi will speak on Virtues of Ramazan How to Prepare ourselves During this period.


New artistes to get appointment letters

New artistes who were recruited to the State Dancing and Music troops will be provided with their appointment letters at the Battaramulla, Sethsiripaya by the Cultural and Arts Affairs Ministry under the patronage of Cultural and Arts Affairs Minister T.B. Ekanayake on August 2 at 2.00 pm. About 32 artistes will receive their appointment letters at this event.

Out of the 32, 16 of them will be for the State Dancing Troop and the balance 16 for the State Music Troop. Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary Wimal Rubasinghe and Cultural Affairs Director Vijith Kanugala will also participate in this event.

Music duo Bathiya n Santhush are featured on Sri Lanka's national news website www.lankapuvath.lk. The video interview is displayed in three segments. Both Bathiya and Santhush speaks of their future plans and experiences in this 45 minute video interview with the state national website.


Applications for Bhathkande music exams

The Tower Hall Foundation has called for applications for the Bhathkande Music and Dance examinations which will be held by the Bhathkande Music Faculty, from external applicants for year 2011.

The examination will be held by the Tower Hall Foundation.

Applications can be obtained from the Sarasavipaya-Lional Edirisinhe Centre, Maradana, Colombo -10. The Closing date is August 10.
