An MoU was inked for a pilot project on chemical leasing between the
Industrial Development Board (IDB) and the National Cleaner Production
Center (NCPC) to minimise chemical usage.
IDB Chairman U Kariyawasam and NCPC Director S Peiris took part in
signing the MoU. The objective is to assist enterprises in promoting
sustainable management of chemicals to boost economic performance and
access to world market.
Chemical leasing is a new concept and an innovative business model
said IDB Chairman, suggesting new forms of payment for chemicals that
are directing the economic interests of all partners towards process
optimization and reduction of chemical consumption. He added that this
agreement would close the material cycles between supplies and use of
chemicals which would create economic benefits and environmental
advantages.
Plans are afoot to carryout this project under three steps. The first
would be identifying appropriate chemicals, processes and partners. The
second is making the required parameters to be more eco-friendly and
systemization technical potential in the future.
"Our aim is to upgrade all chemical related industries in a more
eco-friendly manner," the chairman said.
He added that this is being done through 22 IDB district offices and
17 industrial villages.
