Educational trip turns into tragedy

Three students of Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya, Haresbedda, Nuwara Eliya, drowned in the Nilaveli sea yesterday.

The students were on an educational trip to Trincomalee.

According to Kuchchiveli Police sources, three students caught in a strong current drowned while another was rescued by the Navy.

The victims were in the age group of 14 and 15. The rescued student is reportedly in a critical condition.

The Navy recovered the bodies yesterday afternoon. Kuchchiveli Police requested parents and elders to be extra vigilant when children bathe in the Nilaveli sea.

Police said that special places have been earmarked for bathing in the Nilaveli beach and visitors should use these places for bathing.
