Hambantota developing into major economic hub

The Hambantota district is developing into a major economic hub in
Sri Lanka and is likely to become an important city in South Asia.

Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Chairman Dr. Anura Ekanayake, speaking at
the press conference on Hambantota Investment Forum to be conducted by
the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce with the Hambantota District
Secretariat said Hambantota is fast becoming a commercial city and it is
projected to be the second commercial city in the country. “It will also
be a tourist hub,” he said.
The development of both the international harbour and airport along
with many other infrastructure projects are underway. “These major
projects have the potential to substantially accelerate economic
development of the district and will create many opportunities in many
areas.”
“The involvement of the private sector in the development process and
an effective public private partnership will help to create a healthy
and productive investment and business environment.”

Already 50 large scale investments have come to the district and have
started working into the district. These include Shangri-La Hotel,
Insurance Corporation, hotel complex, Laugfs, Raigam Salt, David Pieris
(for three-wheeler assembly) and Micro Cars Assembly and many other
investors specially in the aviation and maritime related fields.
The “private sector can achieve excellent results by investing in the
Hambantota district, with associated benefits to its people. A large
number of jobs will be created as a result of these investment
projects.”
Hambantota District Chamber of Commence CEO Azmi Thassim said 50
investors have registered for the forum which is scheduled to be held on
July 23 at Hotel Eva Lanka, Tangalle.

The objective of the forum is to make the local or national and
international business community to learn about the opportunities in the
district, to maximize their participation to bridge the gap between
demand and supply of information, to create a platform for private and
public partnership.
This will be a unique opportunity to explore investment
opportunities, learn the status of ongoing projects, witness major
development activities taken place in the Hambantota district. More
