Money changing at Laugfs Sunup supermarkets

Laugfs Sunup Supermarkets, a subsidiary of Laugfs Holdings Limited expanded its modern trade service by introducing foreign money changing facilities in its outlets.

Central Bank Governor Ajith N. Cabraal handing over the Foreign Money Exchange licence certificate to Laugfs Holdings Chairman W K H Wegapitiya. Exchange Controller Osman Chandrawansa was present.

The first of the outlet to introduce this facility was the Wellawatte Laugfs Sunup supermarket last week.

Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal said with the rapid development taking place in the country more facilities to engage in money exchange transactions are necessary.

“The indictors what we had five years ago and when compared with today there are positive changes.

“Today we are talking about remittances coming to the country to the value of US $ 5 billion and it is increasing”, he said.

As the remittances increase we have to make sure that our infrastructure is improved to meet the demand and offer easy access for the people to change their money without any hindrance.

Earlier we had very few money changers and we extended that to finance companies too. With the expected increase in the level of remittances the money changing facility needs to be enhanced and the measures taken by Laugfs are timely, he said.

Laugfs Holdings Chairman W K H Wegapitiya said “Laugfs being a truly Sri Lankan company always supports the national cause of the country.

The money changing facilities in the Sunup Supermarket chains would help the country to move forward with broad based services. The inclusion of money changing facility at the supermarket will enable customers to do their shopping while also attending to money exchange needs. This will provide a better super marketing experience”, he said.
