Sharp drop in vegetable prices

The prices of essential consumer items are dropping rapidly in the open market with increased inflow of agricultural produce to the market.

More stocks of vegetables are flooding the market with dambala, pumpkin, brinjal and tomato prominent among the items. The prices of many vegetable varieties have dropped some as much as by 89 percent.

There have also been a drop in the prices of rice, sugar, dhal, green gram, red onion, chillies and eggs in the market.

Minister Johnston Fernando said that the prices of consumer items have come down due to the government's efforts to ensure the welfare and protection of both the farmer and the consumer.
